Fantasy Football Stocks: Week One

Similar to stocks on the New York Stock Exchange, players will have their value rise or fall every single week. As fantasy football players, it is vital that we understand which players to buy stock in and which players to sell to someone else or release to the waiver wire. This article will help show the players who are gonna skyrocket but are struggling now, players that are going to jump off of a cliff, and players who are already skyrocketing. Let’s dive into it.

Players whose stock is skyrocketing:

Isaiah Likely:

You’re going to hear this name a lot this week and rightfully so. Likely’s stock went from a projected backup TE on the Ravens to potentially a go-to target for Lamar Jackson. He recorded nine receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. He’s 6’5 and 245 pounds and has great hands. Jackson clearly trusts him as a receiving option and he is absolutely worth a spot on your bench, if not your starting lineup in fantasy football. People may say he’s a sell-high candidate, but 12 targets is impossible to deny especially at a position like tight end where the week-to-week output can vary a ton. Having a tight end who can accrue a ton of targets is incredibly valuable. His stock absolutely skyrocketed this week so acquiring him via trade will be difficult, but he’s available in 91% of leagues on ESPN.

Ladd McConkey:

He’s a rookie wide receiver with 4.38 speed and looks to be the number one target for Justin Herbert. In just his first game as an NFL player he recorded five receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. His stock is going to skyrocket and now is the time to buy. His statline won’t wow his current owners (although a very good statline) and his upside as the number one target for a top five quarterback in the NFL is very high. His stock is starting to skyrocket after an impressive debut and this is a player worth acquiring as he is just getting started as an NFL player. The next highest targeted player was Quentin Johnston with five targets and Johnston struggled to catch the ball consistently through his first year. Competition is low in that WR corps and that is a good sign for McConkey.

Rhamondre Stevenson:

Stevenson is playing for a Patriots team that was projected to struggle immensely this year offensively (and they still only scored 16 points), but he played very well in week one. He had 25 rush attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown plus three receptions for six yards. 28 touches will not happen every week certainly, but he is a player whose stock is shooting up after this week. Managers may be looking to sell high off of this performance, but he could provide fringe RB1 production given his potential workload and it could be worth it to pay that price.

Players who are gonna skyrocket but are struggling now:

Marvin Harrison Jr.:

The 6’3 rookie with 4.46 speed really struggled in week one as he only managed one catch for four yards on three targets. He’s an elite talent who just played his first ever game in the NFL. It’s far too early to throw the bust label on a player, but fantasy football managers may be looking to move him to try and recoup value from a player they drafted to be the ninth best wide receiver in all of fantasy.  He is a buy-low candidate as his value will never be lower. That does not mean he will be cheap, but it is likely the cheapest price he will be at all season. His upside is obviously massive given his talent level and not to mention his quarterback being Kyler Murray. His stock is falling and now is the time to grab him or you might never have a chance again this year.

Tank Dell:

Dell recorded a modest 40 yards receiving on three receptions but did get targeted seven times. It seems that Diggs will be the go-to short yardage wide receiver with six receptions for just 33 yards and Nico is the number one, but Dell is explosive and has a chance to produce every week with CJ Stroud as his quarterback. This is one of the lowest prices that Dell will be able to be acquired at and he had a special connection with Stroud last year given that they came into the league as rookies at the same time. Seven targets is encouraging and Dell still was second on the team in receiving yards despite a statline that was below average for him. His stock should skyrocket as the season progresses and is a player to look to get for cheap in a trade package.

Player who is going to fall off a cliff:

Courtland Sutton:

There were no wild outlier performances this week and the only player who fits the bill is Courtland Sutton. Bo Nix really struggled in his debut with 138 yards on 42 attempts which was good for only 3.3 yards per attempt. Sutton has not had over 829 yards in a season since 2019 and his quarterback play this season like it will not be ideal to put it kindly. 12 targets is promising to some extent but this Broncos offense seems like it will be struggling in all phases of the game. Their top two running backs combined for just 50 yards rushing on 18 attempts total and his upside just does not seem worth taking a shot on. If you can sell Sutton for anything, it could be beneficial long-term.
